Rancho Buena Vista Update - 12-12-2011

The rain started right before game time and didn't let up until the 2nd half. Both teams got off to a slow start with neither team really having to many scoring opportunities in the 1st half.

The 2nd half was a little better with Poway almost coming through on a cross from Eric Budniewski that was just pushed wide by Fredy Cedillo. We did have one more opportunity late in the game when Sean Gallagher headed a corner kick just wide of the far post. The game ended in a 0-0 tie.

Our next game will be Friday against one of the top teams in the county, Hilltop. Game time is 6:00pm
San Clemente Game Update - 12-03-2011

Playing the defending CIF champions Poway felt confident entering the game that they would be up to the challenge. Unfortunately, less than 20 minutes into the game, four of our players had received yellow cards. Some would be considered questionable, but that's the way it goes sometimes.. Coach Gene has told the boys he is taking a position early in the year to not risk any players receiving red cards and potentially jeopardizing their play for later in the year and we ended up playing the game with numerous starters sitting on the bench for a majority of the time.

There was outstanding play by Philip Bru and Spencer Orr in goal to keep the game at a 3-0. We did not advance out of bracket play.
Southwest Game Update - 12-02-2011
In Poway's second game of the year, once again our defense proved worthy notching their second straight shutout to start the season but unfortunately, Southwest's defense was up to the challenge and hung a shut out on our team as well.

Southwest has played three game and given up one goal on the year and played excellent defense against a Poway team missing several key offensive starters
Eastlake Game Update - 11-30-2011
Poway came out for their first game of the year and although missing some starters, came out victorious by the score of 2-0. Philip Bru made some nice saves in goal and the entire defense started off where they ended last year by recording their first shut out of the year.

Torrey Pines (Semi-Finals Div 1) game update 3-01-2011

We picked a bad time to lose our 1st home game of the year. The old saying that it's hard to beat the same team three times in a year was so true tonight. The game started very positive for us as Eric Budniewski's free kick sailed into the box where Darien Naraghi sent a great header over to Ben Faller and Ben was able to send another header by the Falcon goaltender for a 1-0 lead. Torrey Pines came back and scored two quick goals to take a 2-1 lead. We were able to tie it late in the half when Eric Budniewski scored on a indirect free kick from inside the penalty area. The half ended @ 2-2.

Torrey Pines came out strong in the 2nd half and their pressure on us finally paid off when they scored two quick goals to take a 4-2 lead. We did make it close late in the game when Eric Budniewski made a rush into the Torrey Pines zone and was tripped inside the penalty area and we were awarded a penalty kick. Evan Myers then stepped up and blistered a shot past the Falcons goaltender to pull us within a goal at 4-3. We kept the pressure on but Torrey came back and restored the lead to two and made that hold up for the final score 5-3.

You can tell we missed our star defender, Sean Gallagher. We had only allowed more than 2 goals in a game once this year before tonight. I believe it would have been a different outcome if Sean had played.

What a ride it's been for us this year. With only Four returning starters from last years team we were not expected to have a good year. Did this team show us otherwise. This years highlights:

- Champions of the Coronado Invitational Tournament
- Champions of the San Diego High Holiday Tournament
- Co-Champions of the Palomar League
- Team record 24 victories
- Team record 19 wins in a row
- Team record 23 game unbeaten streak
- Ranked in the top 5 of the state since Jan. 1st
- Eric Budniewski # 1 point scorer in San Diego County - Large Schools (19 goals, 22 assists)
- Evan Myers # 2 point scorer in San Diego County - Large Schools (26 goals, 5 assists)
- Evan Myers named Palomar Player of the Year
- Eric Budniewski named ESPN Rise player of the week (Jan. 5th, 2011)
- Ranked in the top 10 in the Nation from January - March.
- Ranked # 2 in the nation (Feb. 14th, 2011)

On another note, our record with 3 of the 4 remaining teams left in the Div.1 & 11 playoffs this year was 6-1, that is amazing. What a year we have had. Thank you to all the boys and to all our fans for supporting us this year. This will be hard to top next year but if anyone can make it happen it's Coach Morris.

Mira Mesa (Quarter-Finals Div 1) game update 2-25-2011

The playoffs are upon us and we didn't disappoint. Even the expected wind and rain stayed away and allowed us to play the game under pretty good conditions.
Darien Naraghi got us on the board at the 10 minutes mark when Eric Budniewski sent a crossing pass into the box that Evan Myers deflected over to Dairen, who then deposited into the back of the net to give us the early lead. The 1st half was pretty even with both teams getting a couple of good opportunities.
In the 52nd minute, Eric Budniewski's corner kick landed in front of Evan Myers, who had his shot blocked, it then rolled over to Luke Flud who put it into the net for a seemingly comfortable 2-0 lead. Mira Mesa had other ideas though. They got on the board with about 10 minutes left on a 25 yard blast that just went under the crossbar. This made for a wild finish. Mira Mesa kept the pressure on and were awarded a corner kick with about 2 minutes left. The ball never made it into the box and was deflected over the Eric Budniewski. Eric started his run deep in our end, moved up the left side of the field, crossed over to the right side at midfield. Once he got deep into the Mira Mesa zone he faked out one defender, crossed back over where he faked out a 2nd defender, then shot a low left footed ball into the corner of the net for the goal of the year. It pushed our lead back to two and that is where it ended up. To bad PPR wasn't there to get that one on tape. Zach McDonnel picked up his 17th win on the season. Next up will be another rematch with Torrey Pines @ home on Tuesday @ 7:00pm.

Rancho Bernardo Game Update - 2-18-2011

What an effort. Already knowing that Westview had defeated Mt. Carmel earlier in the day 1-0, we knew that we needed to win in order to grab a share of the Palomar League title for the 2nd straight year....Boy did we come to play......On a cold and rainy night we wanted to show everyone that we indeed are the team to beat. With our sweeper and defensive leader, Sean Gallagher, sitting out his second straight game, our defense and goaltender stepped it up.

Ben Faller, wearing Sean Gallaghers jersey, got us started in the 31st minute, when off a corner kick from Eric Budniewski, he rose above the R.B. defense to head the ball past the R.B. goaltender. There was no more scoring in the 1st half.
Early in the 2nd half we were able to push our lead to 2-0 when Ben Faller, again, was in the right place at the right time. The score came off a free kick from Eric Budniewski that was deflected by Ernie Reyes, right to Ben, who then headed it into the net to pad our lead. After that it was just up to our defense including Nick Custis, Zach Lentz, Kyle Hess, Ben Faller, Chris Kusunoki, and Ernie Reyes to keep R.B. away from our goal. The defense played great. Not to be left out was our goaltender, Zach McDonnell. Zach registered his league leading 9th shutout of the year. Many of his saves were incredible but none better than when he deflected a shot over the goal in the last two minutes. Other players pitching in and playing a good game were Evan Myers, Kevin Meyer, Eric Budniewski, Jeff Meyer, Luke Flud and freshman Sasha Peranteau, a recent call up from the JV team.
As the final whistle sounded the boys stormed the field and celebrated their 2nd straight Co-Palomar League championship. On hand to help in the celebration was Poway all-time leading scorer and U.C. Davis star Alex Henry. Playoff brackets will be announced on Saturday.

Westview Game Update - 2-16-2011

With a chance to clinch the Palomar League title we came out strong. Nick Custis got us going at the 4 minute mark when he ripped a shot from 25 yards out into the corner of the net to give us an early 1-0 lead. Westview was able to tie it up about 10 minutes before halftime when a throw in was re-directed over the head of our goalie, Zach McDonnell. That's the way the 1st half ended.

The 2nd half was mostly played on our half of the field, our defense saved two goals that were definately going into the net. The pressure Westview was applying finally paid off for them as they scored off another throw in with 18 minutes remaining. The rest of the game was all about Westview trying to clear the ball out of their zone as soon as they could. We were able to get a few scoring chances but were turned back everytime and the game ended in a 2-1 loss. Our 1st loss of the year. Zach McDonnell also suffered his 1st loss of the year after starting the season 15-0-3.

Westview is now tied with us for 1st place with Rancho Bernardo only 2 points behind. A win against Rancho Bernardo on Friday will still clinch us at least a share of the Palomar league title. This was our 1st game played without Sean Gallagher, our sweeper, since he was injured by a Ramona Player last game. Sean is doing much better and we hope his presence on the bench, along with peachy, will give us the extra motivation we need when we play Rancho Bernardo @ 7:00pm at R.B. Come on out and support us on our last regular season game.

Ramona Game Update 2-11-2011

The boys came to play. Eric Budniewski got us started at the 16 minute mark when he took a Nick Custis pass and ripped it into the back of the net for a 1-0 lead. Evan Meyer pushed the lead to 2-0 when he re-directed a cross from Eric Budniewski into the back of the net. After halftime we were able to pour it on....Evan Myers picked up his 2nd goal of the game on a pass from Nick Custis. Six minutes later Eric Budniewski scored his 17th goal of the season on a great long pass from Kevin Meyer. Evan Myers completed his hat trick by putting away his league leading 25th goal of the season. Heber Torres finished the scoring on a pass from Alejandro Berry.

The game was stopped at the 22 minute mark of the 2nd half when a Ramona player decided he had enough of our defense and went after our sweeper, Sean Gallagher. The Ramona player threw more than one punch to Sean's face. Sean ended up going to the hospital and then to the oral surgeon where he had surgery to repair 3 fractures to his upper jaw line and re-align his teeth. In addition to that he had stitches to his chin and inside his mouth....Unfortunately, it looks like our # 1 defender is done for the year. We all are hoping for a quick and successful return. Our thoughts are with him. The Ramona player was given a Red Card and hopefully will not play another high school soccer game.

Our next game will be Wednesday when we travel west on the 56 to take on Westview with a chance to clinch the Palomar League title. Game time is 5:00pm.

Torrey Pines Game Update 2-09-2011

This game looked like a repeat of our last game with Torrey Pines..Very physical, lots of yellow cards, some red cards (for them) and the most important stat of all...the final score...2-1 Us....

We started fast as Eric Budniewski took a nice pass from Luke Flud and left footed the ball into the corner of the net just past the outstretched hands of the goalie for his 15th goal of the season just 5 minutes into the game...Torrey was able to tie it up at the 19 minute mark when they headed a ball into the net off a free kick...It stayed that way until halftime.

Coach Gene Morris, as he has done on numerous occasions was able to deliver his terrific halftime pep talk. The boys seemed to respond and after several close calls we were able to take the lead for good when Kevin Meyers took a hard shot from 25 yards out that looked like it was heading into the coner of the net but the Torrey Pines goalie came out of nowhere to make a tremendous save but Evan Myers was in great position to knock home the rebound for his 22nd goal of the year 10 minutes into the 2nd half.

The defense, led by Sean Gallagher, Ben Faller, Zach Lentz, Nick Custis, Ernie Reyes and our goalie Zach McDonnell were able to make it stand up....Also playing solid for Poway in the win were Darien Naraghi, Alejandro Berry, Heber Torres and Sean Murray. The win gave us the season sweep of Torrey, pushed our record to 21-0-3 and stretched our unbeaten streak to 24 games....In both of our games against Torrey Pines this year Eric Budniweski and Evan Myers were the goal scorers and Luke Flud along with Kevin Meyer were the players with assists. We also held the high scoring Falcons to one goal in each game......Our last regular season game at home will be against Ramona on Friday @ 5:00pm. Come on out and support the team on Senior Night.....

Mt. Carmel Game Update 2-04-2011

What a difference two weeks make. After we beat Mt. Carmel two weeks ago 7-0 they were looking for a little revenge. It was a hard fought and defensive battle as both teams had scoring opportunities but neither could find the back of the net and the game ended up in a 0-0 tie. Mt. Carmel had a defender who could throw the ball in as he was doing a flip throw and the ball would travel 30-40 yards in the air. We were able to deflect each one of his throws away from the goal.

Philip Bru and Zach McDonnell were able to keep Mt. Carmel off the board and our defense helped out to keep the game scoreless. We just couldn't take advantage of the chances we had. We continue our tough Palomar league schedule with an important home game on Wednesday vs Torrey Pines @ 5:00pm.

Westview Game Update 2-02-2011

At least it wasn't a loss. Our 19 game winning streak came to an end but our unbeaten streak was pushed to 22 games without a loss. On a cold and very windy night Westview came out fast and converted a corner kick to take a 1-0 halftime lead. We were able to tie it up 6 minutes into the 2nd half when Evan Myers converted a pass from Nick Custis for his league leading 21st goal of the season. The rest of the game was back and forth with Poway almost taking the lead with 3 minutes left when a corner kick was knocked around the goal crease and just cleared away before we could knock it in. Zach McDonnell came up big in the final minute with a great save off a free kick just outside the box. The tie left us still on top of the Palomar League standings with a 4-0-1 record. We start our 2nd round of league games on Friday @ Mt. Carmel @ 5:00pm.

Rancho Bernardo Game Update 1-28-2011

Wow, where do we start. How do you stop a team that scored 6 goals in their last league game.
Defense...that's how.....Our defense was spectacular. We held UCLA bound Reed McKenna and B.Y.U. bound Dallin Cutler to zero points and not to many good scoring opportunities. When they did have a shot on goal, Zach McDonnell was there to make the save. Zach recorded his league leading 7th shutout of the year. Our defense is anchored by junior center back Sean Gallagher and is backed up by junior stopper Ben Faller. Also pitching in along the back line were senior defenders Nick Custis, Zach Lentz and Freshman Ernie Reyes. A job well done by the boys....

We still need some offense to win games and tonights scoring leader was Senior Luke Flud. After a scoreless and tightly contested 1st half Luke got us on the board early in the 2nd half by converting a nice crossing pass from Darien Naraghi. Shortly after that goal it was Freshman Ernie Reyes rising up above all the players to head a ball into the back of the net on a nice corner from Eric Budniewski. Luke Flud finished out the scoring when Eric Budniewski finished off a nice run by crossing the ball into the box where Luke re-directed it into the net for his 9th goal of the season.

The game was very physical and two Rancho Bernardo players were shown the bench when each of them received their 2nd yellow. The crowd and players celebrated as the final whistle blew and we extracted a little revenge for our loss to R.B. in last years CIF semi-finals. I can't ever remember seeing as many fans to a soccer game as tonight...Lets hope we can get this much support for our next game....oh yeah, by the way...that was our 19th straight win.....Go Titans!!

Ramona Game Update 1-26-2011

Win # 19 was a little more difficult than usual. Ramona came out and played us pretty tight. We were able to break through for a goal in the 1st half when Luke Flud re-directed a corner kick and Evan Myers finished it off for a 1-0 lead. The score stayed that way until late in the game when Eric Budniewski was able to create some space along the side and push a pass through the middle that Evan Myers buried into the back of the net for his league leading 20th goal of the season. Evan has now registered a goal in 7 of his last 8 games. Our defense, led by our middle back, Sean Gallagher, held the Ramona Bulldogs without a shot and Philip Bru recorded his 4th shutout of the year.

Things don't get any easier for the 4th ranked team in the nation. We host top 20 team Rancho Bernardo on Friday @ 5:00pm in Poway. R.B. comes into town with a 11-1-1 record. Our last loss was to R.B. in last years C.I.F. Semi Finals, so we will be looking to dish out some payback. Let's see if we can get a football size crowd for the game and help support the team.
Go Titans!!!!!

Torrey Pines Game Update 1-21-2011

What a game!!! We fell behind 1-0 at halftime when Torrey Pines scored on a 55 yard free kick that sailed over the outstretched hands of our goalie Zach McDonnell as he was being hit by a Torrey defender. Another inspirational halftime speach by Coach Gene worked to perfection. Our boys kept the pressure on and it paid off when Luke Flud sent a cross into the box that Evan Myers headed into the back of the goal for his team leading 18th goal of the season. The goal came with 18 min. left.

We kept the pressure on and with 7 minutes to go Kevin Meyer sent a crossing pass into the box that Eric Budniewski was able to track down before the goalie got to it and lift it over his outstetched arms for the game winner as he was falling to the ground.

Our defense and Zach McDonnell were able to keep Torrey off the boards the rest of the way. The boys celebrated as the final whistle sounded. Zach finished with 8 saves.

It was a very physical game with Torrey receiving 4 yellow cards and 1 for us. Our boys were the game of the week on Prep Pigskin report on KUSI tonight. The win pushes our winning streak to 17 games in a row. Our next game will be Wed. @ Ramona.

Mt. Carmel Game Update 1-19-2011

We jumped out to a 4-0 halftime lead and put it in cruise control from there. Evan Myers got us off to a quick 2-0 lead with two goals on assists from Eric Budniewski. Adding to the goal total was Darien Naraghi (two goals), Luke Flud and Eric Budniewski. Zach Lentz finished the scoring with his 1st goal of the season on a brilliant header in the 2nd half. Eric Budniewski finished with a team high 4 assists. Also adding assists were Ben Faller, Alejandro Berry and Eric Thimes.

Our defense pitched their 9th shut-out of the season. Zach McDonnell and Philip Bru each played a half. The defense doesn't usually get in the stat box but they keep a lot of the teams off the scoreboard. Our defense is led by sweeper Sean Gallagher, stopper Ben Faller and defenders Nick Custis and freshman Ernie Reyes. Next up is a tough road game against Torrey Pines.

The win was our 16th in a row and pushes our overall record to 17-0-1 and 1-0 in league play. We are now ranked # 5 in the ESPN Rise Powerade 50 rankings for high school winter teams.

Mission Hills Game Update 1-14-2011

Heber Torres got us off to a quick 1-0 lead on a pass from Jeff Meyer, 40 seconds later Kevin Meyer scored on a blast from 40 yards out into the upper corner. Ben Faller gave us a 3-0 halftime lead on a nice pass from Kevin Meyer. We kept up the pressure in the 2nd half and our hard work paid off when Darien Naraghi placed a perfect pass across the crease that Luke Flud finished off. Luke returned the favor to Darien with an almost identical pass to finish off the scoring. The win finishes off a perfect non league record for us. League play now starts on Wednesday with a game at home vs Mt. Carmel.

Escondido Game Update - 1-12-2011

We took a 1-0 lead in the 1st half on a nice pass from Kevin Meyer to his brother Jeff Meyer. Escondido was able to tie it up before the end of the half. We came out strong in the 2nd half and our hard work paid off. Jeff Meyer was again involved in the scoring. Jeff was able to get the ball to Luke Flud who finished it off to give us a 2-1 lead. Luke Flud added another goal on a nice play with Sean Gallagher gathering the assist. Evan Myers finished the scoring on a feed from Luke Flud. We are now 15-0-1 and have moved into 10th place on the ESPN Rise Fab50..

Fallbrook Game Update 1-6-2011

The 1st half ended in a 1-1 tie. Evan Myers goal got Poway on the board early on an assist from Darien Naraghi. Poway came out strong in the 2nd half and put up two scores in the 1st 2 minutes.
Evan Myers put in a nice header on a cross from Eric Budniewski. Less than 1 minute later Eric Budniewski was taken down in the box. He converted the PK for a 3-1 lead. Evan Myers completed his hat trick on strong header in the box on a cross from Budniewski. Nick Custis registered his 1st goal of the season, on his birthday, later in the half with Evan Myers picking up the assist. Fallbrook finished the scoring with a couple of late goals. Zach McDonnell picked up the win in relief of Philip Bru.

Carlsbad Game Update - 1-04-2011

We looked like we were still on our holiday vacation in the 1st half. That's what 10 days in between games will do to you. Inspired by a brilliant halftime speech from Coach Gene Morris the boy's were able to overcome a 2-1 halftime deficit.

Evan Myers started the comeback with a nice goal after we were awarded a penalty kick.
Luke Flud then followed up his 1st half goal with a some nice hustle and determination. After stealing the ball from the Carlsbad defender he put a shot into the corner of the net to put us ahead 3-2. Eric Budniewski finished off the scoring with a nice blast from just outside the 18 yard box. Kevin Meyer pitched in with an assist and played a nice game at center mid. Philip Bru, who started the 2nd half, picked up the win.
Poway has now won 12 straight games....Next game is Thursday, Jan. 6th @ 5:00pm in Fallbrook.
